Rehabilitation Medicine aims to restore function. In the inpatient setting we treat patients with severe disabilities such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury with tetraplegia or paraplegia, cancer, and orthopedic disorders including amputations and fractures. In addition we are involved in sub-specialty work such as intensive care rehabilitation, deconditioning and frailty, and paediatric rehabilitation. Patients are commonly followed up in the outpatient setting and into the chronic phase of their conditions, where issues complicating daily activities, return to work, and community life are addressed.
We also care for patients with acute and chronic pain and are involved in the management of a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain and work or sports-related injuries. We approach each patient through a specialist or multidisciplinary team approach, using a wide range of medications, interventions and devices such as braces and prostheses, therapies, robotics, and modalities to achieve optimal outcomes.
